Yep. I wrote a fanfiction. I actually finished one that I started and posted it! It’s a response to a challenge sent out by Karen, the talented authouress of Evangeline, a Hannibal Heyes love story (Go read that if you haven’t. Go now! And don’t spare the horses or look back. Shoo!!). So a few notes on this before I post it.
First, it’s sadly not a love story. I’m not yet comfortable with my writing to make a decent love story. And it’s not particularly one-partner centric. My hope is that it’ll appeal to Heyes girls and Kid lovers equally. I also tried to make it roll somewhat like an episode of AS&J, scenes and all.
Ruth Jones (Or Ms. Ruthie, as we all called her,) is an old mentor of mine whom I love and miss very dearly, since I haven’t seen her in years. She too is married to a very sweet man named Jimmy Jones (Who just happens to be a retired preacher). I was going to change their last name, but at the last minute I left it. I thought it’d be fun for once to have a time that our dear Mr. Jones really did meet one of those many many other folks named Jones in the world. *winks*
I also know a David Jones in real life. He’s NOTHING like the Davy in this story. Exactly the opposite, and frequently quite obnoxious lol. I have no idea why I put a Davy Jones in my fic, but just like Ruthie, it just happened that way. Once the names were on paper, they stuck. So there they sit. The only name that made its way to the page with any planning involved was Shorty White. He’s another very dear mentor of mine, and since I had Ruthie in there I decided I wanted a little tip of the hat to him too.
Both Crockett and Bumblebee are real locations near where I live in Arizona. You won’t find Crockett Bend on any map as it’s more of a local landmark, though.
The idea of gold being buried on the land actually came from a novel I read not long ago. The rest of the story is mostly from my own strange mind, but the gold thing really seemed to work for my idea, so I used it. I know it seems far fetched that this Jimmy Jones guy had a granddaddy with a stash of gold hidden in them there hills, but ya gotta start somewhere.
I used Preacher because I just love the character so much. There definitely needs to be more of him in fanfiction. Thanks to Karen and Thief of my Heart (or Evangeline, a Hannibal Heyes Love Story), he’s got more of a story. For some reason he just seemed to fit where I needed another person in this story, so there he is. I figured being an ex-outlaw himself, he might need to go by something other than “Preacher” when he was around most folk, so he became the Reverend.
Ok, I think my preachin’ is done for now. Lol. Hope y’all enjoyed my story as much as I liked finally writing one! Thank you Karen, for the wonderful and fun challenge!
